{"id":1853,"date":"2012-12-15T11:35:45","date_gmt":"2012-12-15T11:35:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sethandberkley.com\/?p=1853"},"modified":"2012-12-15T11:35:46","modified_gmt":"2012-12-15T11:35:46","slug":"dubious-diving-and-a-bali-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sethandberkley.com\/?p=1853","title":{"rendered":"Dubious Diving, and a Bali Birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We left Gili Trawangan in hopes of finding more amazing diving off the coast of Bali near Amed. \u00a0But first, we were going to go out on a Jukung, a Balinese fishing boat, to catch some Mahi Mahi. \u00a0We set out before sunrise and the stars were amazing. \u00a0Once the sun came out, and we saw the boat and available gear, we knew that we would not be catching any fish. \u00a0But, we had a nice sunrise boat ride, nonetheless. \u00a0While we were boating around &#8216;fishing&#8217; we saw pods of dolphins dancing through the water. \u00a0That was nice. \u00a0I wanted to hop in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Indonesia_0014.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sethandberkley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Indonesia_00141.jpg\" alt=\"Indonesia 0014\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Indonesia_0139.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sethandberkley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Indonesia_0139.jpg\" alt=\"Indonesia 0139\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were back and ready to dive at 8am. \u00a0We saw some pretty amazing soft corals, and we went deep to find a huge wreck of the USAT Liberty. \u00a0The USAT Liberty was a US cargo ship from WWII that was hit by a Japanese torpedo. \u00a0The damage was beyond repair, so they beached the ship and took out all the cargo. \u00a0The ship stayed on shore until 1963 when the volcano erupted and the lava pushed the ship back into the sea where it sits today off the coast of Tulamben. \u00a0Though it was large and there was a lot of life around the wreck, the water was cold, and our gear was pretty crappy, which made for an uncomfortable dive. \u00a0The next dive was to the Coral garden. \u00a0The site was filled with tons of soft corals, eels, sea stars, and tiny critters we had never seen before. \u00a0It was pretty neat. \u00a0But, it was still cold, and the visibility was still bad. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Indonesia_0154.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sethandberkley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Indonesia_01541.jpg\" alt=\"Indonesia 0154\" width=\"500\" height=\"666\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It ended up raining pretty hard that night, and left us without hope for better visibility for our upcoming dive. \u00a0The plan was to do three more dives in the area, but after our first dive we decided against it. \u00a0Even though it was a cold and uncomfortable dive, it wasn&#8217;t a shabby way to spend my 30th birthday. \u00a0We saw some amazing pink fans, some blue spotted sting rays, some purple nudibranchs, anemones the size of trash can lids, and so much more. \u00a0It&#8217;s amazing what you can find down there. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We hopped in a car to make our way to Ubud. \u00a0I&#8217;m told it&#8217;s the cultural capital of Bali, but so far it seems to be tourist central. \u00a0Streets filled with expensive boutiques selling clothing, aromatherapy, and chachkies interspersed with hotels and restaurants. \u00a0So far, the best part is all of the huge geckos we&#8217;ve found in our rooms. \u00a0Also, our room is right up against the monkey forest, so we had visitors running around our roof and balcony this morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We left Gili Trawangan in hopes of finding more amazing diving off the coast of Bali near Amed. \u00a0But first, we were going to go out on a Jukung, a Balinese fishing boat, to catch some Mahi Mahi. \u00a0We set &hellip;
