Food – Eataly

Mario Batali has done a wonderful job at creating a European style open air market. It was well into the 90’s in Manhattan and to escape into an air conditioned food theme park was about as wonderful of a thing as I could ask for. Meats, cheeses, fish, pasta the list of goodies seemed endless. We had to start somewhere, so we ordered a dozen oysters. Sweet, briny, and topped with freshly grated horseradish, lemon and home made hot sauce. They were a perfect cool treat after the 90+ heat outside.

I forgot to mention the wonderful fragrant bread they brought before the oysters, but what shined through even more then the bread was the olive oil. Barbera Lorenzo #3, this oil had a delicate floral note with a spicy pepper finish, it complimented the house made bread perfectly.

Food – Beer steamed mussels and chorizo

These steamed mussels were both my entrée and a massive hit at our table. We drove over an hour and a half to get to what is currently my favorite restaurant on the western slope of Colorado, The Pullman in Glenwood Springs. It’s been open just over 3 years and I make the trip every time I come out to visit my parents in Meeker. It was my 31st birthday on the 22nd and my moms birthday on the 27th, we decided to make the drive and catch a late lunch. The mussels were perfectly cooked and had a wonderfully sweet flavor that balanced out nicely with the heat from the chorizo. Topped with home made fries and garlic mayo, dipping those in the sauce at the bottom was the best part.

Food – Leftover Chicken, Salad

Who says my wife doesn’t cook? Well mostly I say that, but she made me a great salad for dinner tonight. She tossed some of the leftover grilled lemon parsley chicken breast on top of butter lettuce, red romaine, crunchy carrots, radishes, and sliced scallions. Topped with some of my mom’s home made blue cheese dressing.

Thanks wife!

Food – Bad Burger

Bad Burger at Creekbend Bistro in Rifle Colorado. The title says it all, I ordered the Bronco Burger medium rare and at first bite I could tell it was way past well done. The house made BBQ sauce was Bullseye brand and the Chipotle potato salad came out of a gallon jug from a big box store. Dry patty, wilted lettuce, mushy potato salad, and off the shelf sweet bbq sauce. If you find yourself on I-70 near Rifle Colorado, skip the highly rated Creekbend Bistro.

Food – Five Hour Energy

It’s the first full day of our adventure! We left Los Angeles Thursday afternoon and set off for Colorado. After driving well into the night and getting to Flagstaff Arizona we woke up early and headed over to see the Grand Canyon. But because of a restless nights sleep we were both wiped out so to prevent either of us falling asleep at the wheel we each drank one of these. Suffice to say we made it all the way to Meeker safe and sound.

Bites Day 01

We bought our tickets

No turning back now, we purchased our around the world airline tickets. We used the Star Alliance airline network so the dates are very flexible. But here is the general outline.

Denver to Frankfurt – June 28th

Istanbul to Dar Es Salam – August 16th

Dar Es Salam to Delhi – September 1st

Kathmandu to Osaka – October 9th

Osaka to Bangkok – October 29th

Bangkok to Singapore – November 29th

Singapore to Denver – December 29th

—————————————————-

Denver to New York City – TBD

New York City to Madrid  – TBD

Madrid to Istanbul – TBD

After weeks and weeks of research I ended up discovering a little loophole when purchasing the tickets. If you don’t want to read the specifics of how we saved around four thousand dollars and ended up with a freebie trip to New York and Madrid read no further.

When purchasing the around the world ticket , starting in Denver the ticket costs 13,000 dollars for the two of us. If you move the starting location to Istanbul keeping all stops the same the ticket drops to 9,000 for the both of us. But we still need to get to Istanbul to start the trip off. Thats where a specific credit card comes into play. After searching high and low to find the perfect credit card to use over seas I decided the CHASE Sapphire Preferred Visa was the best one. No annual fee, no overseas surcharges, and 50,000 bonus points when you spend 3 thousand in the first three months. We got two of these cards, one in my name and one in my wife’s name. We used one card to purchase the tickets and the other to purchase a bunch of new gear for the trip. With our bonus points in play we used those to get tickets from Denver to Frankfurt, from there we will make our way to Istanbul and start the around the world ticket getting off the plane in Denver. BUT one requirement for the ticket is that you must start and end in the same country. So we have tickets that go from Denver to Madrid then Madrid to Istanbul that we can use within a calendar year of the first flight out of istanbul. So if you were able to follow all that what it means is that we saved four thousand dollars and got free one way tickets to Spain with a bit of research and careful planning.

my boots kicked my ass..

My blisters have blisters on them, nuff said.

If her boots were made for walking..

Then my boots are made for kicking ass! Turns out I’m going to need a lot more then wimpy little patagonia hiking shoes when carrying a pack up Kilimanjaro, although I’m still planning to bring those as my urban option. So I found these bad boys, I’ve owned a few ASOLO hiking low tops before but these are way more burly. I was told by a random stranger, who overheard my shoe needs that there is a ton of mud in south east Africa and specifically around Kili. We are planning a hike tomorrow to test out our new kicks.

These boots were made for kicking ass!

Lets do some SHOTS!

We each did 5 shots last night, its was crazy. Ok so maybe crazy isn’t the right way to describe it. It was painful, but we are now immune to Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Meningococcal Meningitis, Polio, Diphtheria, Measles, Pneumococcal, and Tetanus. On the plus side, the travel Dr. who was recommended to us by my high school friend August is amazing. She and her staff are very friendly, informative, and helpful. Probably the best Dr. visit each of us has ever had. We are fully outfitted with anti-malaria, altitude sickness, nausea, diarrhea meds, etc.. pretty much any bug that comes in our way will get zapped. Bangkok street food here i come!!

What to do with pets?

My wife and I have a 3 to 4 year old Tibetan Terrier named Mochi. I say 3 to 4 because she is a rescue and we had to guess her age. We obviously needed to find  place for Mochi to live while we galavanted around the world for six months. Luckily my parents live in Colorado on a few acres and have access to a ranch that is thousands of acres. Whenever Mochi has visited she loves it, it’s a dog paradise; birds, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, more birds, bugs (she chases grass hopper shadows). Especially so for one thats used to living in an apartment in Los Angeles. So the choice was obvious, she needs to go to Colorado and live with my parents for the 6 months we are away. Two weeks ago my parents surprised the family by buying two dingo/miniature australian shepherd puppies; Nellie and Cricket. The dog paradise just got even more paradise-ier, now she has two buds to play with.
